INSPIRATION

INSPIRATION //

To help myself plan the storyboard and shot-lists of my narrative story for the music video, I created mood boards of current narrative music videos. I did this, because they represent and display the cinematography I am hoping to capture. The shots are landscape wide shots, and reveal the relationship between nature and humanity, as well as creating aesthetics for the audience in order to capture their attention.

SETTLE DOWN //

THE 1975

The start of this music video incorporates cinematic landscape photography to every 4th beat of the song in a systematic way. The establishing shot reveals the character and the location, which can be inferred as up north due to the industrial structures in the background upon the beaches. The shots are also creative, the mirror image one for example, is similar to an idea I plan to do at the end of my video - where the girl is looking into a mirror, but she sees a different reflection. These simple camera shots use mise en scene and composition well to create a simple but effective outcome to tell the mysterious story. The rule of thirds has also been used, as it shows the characters in different areas of the screen, which puts emphasis on different aspects of the narrative. In the establishing shot, the young boy is minuscule compared to the industrial buildings behind him, so this reveals that his home area is a large problem to the audience. The Director, Nadia Marquard Otzen, explained the video: "About breaking free from feeling trapped and isolated in a world where everybody seems to be in on doing you harm and deliberately keeping some looming secret from you. It's about ultimately meeting and connecting with that other human being who you have always sensed was there, and at that moment you meet the world as you know it dies away."

SWEATER WEATHER //

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

This video cuts the shots exactly to the beat of the music, which Goodwin described as Thought Beats - where the visuals are edited to the pace of the song. This music confirms his idea of this being successful, as it makes the video upbeat and fast, which makes the audience tense and waiting for more to see what is happening and what the relationship between the visuals and lyrics are. This video has received 195,608,019 views, revealing its success, as this shows that this style is popular. It's establishing shot reveals the band and location with a downward pan from the ceiling, there is then multiple shots of characters and visual imagery, which adds to the aesthetics of the video, as well as its genre which illustrates vintage rock and roll in an urban setting.

ITCH //

NOTHING BUT THIEVES

Unlike the other 2 inspiring videos, this does incorporate performance of the band with narrative storytelling. This breaks up the story line and so the audience are taken back to the instrumental and lyric side of the music video, listening to what is being said "Cause' I just wanna feel something real". This then puts emphasis on what is being illustrated throughout the rest of the video if attention is given. There is a sense that this generation are bored and lacking emotion towards art, feelings and whats surrounding them. For example, the multiple shots with the little girl staring blankly at the paper airplanes, which would have previously caused excitement. There is also the scene where the boy is sat with the fire with a similar expression, once again not feeling any emotion towards the prospect of fire and danger.

The overall aesthetic of the video is rather cinematic in black and white, there is an eeriness to the shadows and lighting, and I feel like this colour palette represents the the generation theory visually. The shots are rather simple, but by using different angles and composition, there is movement and variation to keep the audience interested.
